Abstract

Abstract [en]

Laiuse Castle, which is now in ruins, was a Livonian Order castle in Jõgeva Parish, Estonia. The aim of the thesis is to make people recognize and appreciate the old ruins around us and consider them as a possible activating factor of urban or village life. It needs to be noted that Laiuse Castle, with its rich history, has the potential to be a visitor center. The events that have been held annually have now been suspended and ruins have become dangerous for visitors. Therefore, this project seeks to attract attention to the situation of Laiuse fortress ruins and to offer solution on its own. The project provides a solution for the old ruins to combine them with new architectural ideas, contemplating the balance between modern architecture and ancient history. The aim of the work is to conserve the existing ruins and present them to the visitors. However, besides exposed ruins, an environment has been attempted to create, that would appeal to people in different ages and interest groups. The creation of a museum, a cafe and a multifunctional building allows for the coexistence of different activities, and combining them with the past made it possible to create a unique route through history.
