Abstract

Paljud tarneahelad kannatavad piiratud läbipaistvuse all. Püstitatud uurimisküsimused on välja toodud töö sissejuhatuses.

Abstract [en]

Many supply chains suffer from limited transparency. This means that the activities of a single unit are not visible to all parts of the supply chain. One of the reasons for this is the lack of a functioning information system and information technologies. These are used as an effective means of support for logistical operations. In Põldma Kaubanduse Inc. the lack of these systems and technologies during the handling of goods creates a bottleneck situation which in turn causes the limited flow of information. The choice of subject matter for the author’s thesis is based on the fact that presently hindrances appear in the processes of dispensing and receiving goods in Põldma Kaubanduse Inc. The choice of subject matter is also based on the author’s personal interest, as they themselves work in the aforementioned corporation and wish to find a solution to the problem they are personally frequently faced with. The problem consists of the manual documentation of deliveries and hindrances in the delivery tracking system which affects the security of supply. The corporation lacks the ability to follow the route of the delivery. This comes from a lack of information. The limited flow of information makes the whole chain of distribution opaque which in turn is one of the reasons for the loss of goods. The purpose of this final paper is to improve upon the processes of handling goods in Põldma Kaubanduse Inc. The author analyses the working processes of the handling of goods in Põldma Kaubanduse Inc. by comparing the actions in the current and the proposed new process and analysing their differences. The final paper is divided into two chapters. Firstly, the author introduces information systems and information technologies, pointing out their main applications in the management of a supply chain. Furthermore, the chapter goes further into different information systems and information technologies which support the logistical operations of the corporation. The first chapter concludes with describing the management of processes and process-based management. The second chapter or the empirical part of the paper begins with an introduction of the corporation in which the research was conducted, Põldma Kaubanduse Inc. The chapter also describes the chosen strategy and methods of research. The research strategy formed into a combined case study. Primary data was collected from observations, interviews and measurements. To reach the objective of the final paper the author thoroughly mapped processes related to the handling of goods currently in use in the corporation and points out hindrances. Furthermore, automatic scanner technology which, from the field of information technology, would be the best solution for Põldma Kaubanduse Inc. is introduced in this chapter. In addition, the author performed a calculation of the aforementioned equipment and the amortization period of the accompanying development of an information system. Lastly, the author presented conclusions and proposals for improvement, summarizing the results from the empirical part of the final paper. The research shows that due to the lack of an information system and information technologies, the working processes concerning the handling of goods are problematic. The processes include actions that could be made faster if a mobile scanner was used. Likewise, the processes include actions that have no added value and that can be removed from them. The processes of handling goods see an almost 38% increase in speed which means that employees can spend the remaining time on other important task. In view of the fact that in Põldma Kaubanduse Inc. a medium sized volume of goods is handled, the corporation has a lot of inventory, many workplaces and shipping destinations, the best option would be the implementation of the mobile scanner Dolphin 60s. The analysis of the amortization period shows that investing into the Dolphin 60s and its software development pays off after one year and eigth months after the purchase and implementation of the automatic scanner. Based on what is written in the theoretical part, it can also be concluded that deliveries within the corporation will become more transparent due to the routes and locations of all goods being traceable with the use of the scanner technology. In addition, an important alteration is precision and a decrease in errors meaning that goods do not reach wrong destinations and the loss of goods is out of the question. Untrustworthy delivery of goods, long delivery times, a surplus or lack of inventory or loss of revenue arising from the aforementioned circumstances would not occur. The author, with their paper wishes to provide the corporation clear justification for making an investment and hopes that further development will be implemented.
