Abstract

It's not necessary to read all 45 thermoplastic profiles. It's also not necessary to memorize each profile to the last detail. However, for each plastic of interest, the student should be able to ... recognize its place in the general systems of classification, name key properties and outstanding characteristics, disinguish it from closely associated plastics, and form a general picture of its range of applications. More generally, if the student works diligently through the material, he or she should be able form an overall picture of the thermoplastic landscape, see some of the patterns among the permutations of resins, fillers, and additives, understand the effect, for example, of molecular weight and crystallinity on material properties, and develop a sense of the tradeoff between cost and performance.
