Abstract

The present learning object was created to provide an eye-catching introduction to the language of women’s clothing for those learning either English, German, or Russian as a second language. The material should be of interest both to students of clothing design and to a more general audience interested in women’s fashion. The object covers 5 categories of clothing-related terms: “Basic clothing”, “Skirts, pants and blouses”, “Clothing elements and accessories”, “Necklines, collars and pockets”, and “Patterns and colors”. The terms are presented in flashcard format: combining images, text, and audio (with cards shown in random order). Additional review of terms is provided in the form of two types of exercises based on a randomly arranged array of images: where the learner is required either 1) to type in the corresponding term for each image or 2) to select the corresponding image after listening to a recording (or optionally reading a question). The object was created using Flash actionscript 3 but is relatively easy to modify (by editing the XML files): the number of terms covered can be increased (or decreased), image and audio files (including credit and licensing information) can be replaced or added, and even questions can be modified or added.
