Abstract

Tootmise muutumisega üha "nutikamaks" ja puhtamaks muutuvad endised suured tehased kasututeks ja jäävad tühjaks. Nende suurte tondilosside lammutamine on kulukas ja tihti jäävadki sellised alad seisma ja muutuvad ajapikku varemeteks. Samal ajal on suureks mureks ka linnade laienemine. Lahenduseks võikski olla linnasiseste nn. brownfieldide kasutusele võtmine, mis linna suurenemise asemel, seda hoopis tihendaks. Tallinnas on selliste tühjade piirkondade kogupindala 540 hektarit ning mitmed suuremad nendest asuvad Põhja-Tallinnas. Projektis käsitletud endise Arsenali tehase kõrval veel näiteks Kopli kaubajaam. Seega on vanadele tööstuspiirkondadele uue kasutuse leidmine aktuaalne ka Tallinnas. Algselt Peeter Suure merekindluse ühe osana rajatud Arsenali kompleks on osaliselt muutunud juba varemeks ja loodusega järjest tihedamalt läbi põimumas. Just sellest kompleksi Tööstuse tänava äärse maja varemetes nurgast sai ka diplomitöö inspiratsiooni.

Abstract [en]

As the manufactoring process is getting "smarter" and cleaner, former factories become useless and empty. It is expensive to demolish these kind of big ghost castles and as the time go by they become ruins. At the same time urban sprawl is getting faster and faster. The solution could be in reusing inner city brownfields so the city would be more dense instead. There are 540 hectares of these kind of unused areas in Tallinn and some of the biggest are located in the northern part of the city. Among the area of the former Arsenal factory also Kopli railway terminal. So finding new functions to these brownfields is an acutal topic in Tallinn. Arsenal area which was established as a part of the see fortification of the Peter the Great, is already turning into ruins and is more and more intertwined with nature. The inspiration for the project actually came from the ruin part of the building next to the Tööstuse street, where the nature has conquered architecture. In this final thesis it is tried to alligate architecture with nature, internal space with external space and private and public spaces. At the same time ruins of the old building are valuated as they are an emotional symbol of the destroying impact of time. New volumes are surrounded by old facades and this creates an unique space that can not be defined as an internal or external space. The main purpose of the proposal is to create new ways to experience both arhictecture and nature.
